How to Mosaic Both Sides of a Skeewbacker

Creating a double-sided mosaic on a Skeewbacker foam core board is a great way to build lightweight, waterproof installations like spinners, panels, partitions, or freestanding art. The process isn’t complicated, but it does require a bit of planning to keep everything flat, balanced, and durable.

Here's the steps:

Start by making sure your Skeewbacker is clean and free of dust. These boards are already waterproof and designed for tile adhesion, so you don’t need additional prep like priming. If you’ll be working on both sides, it helps to sketch or plan your mosaic layouts in advance so weight and design feel balanced across the panel.

I recommend you start with the edges and tile all of them, inside and outside so that you can better line up the tiles that go on the front and back.

Use a high-quality thin-set mortar suitable for mosaics. Butter the backs of your tiles and press your mosaic pieces firmly onto the backer, keeping spacing consistent. Avoid overloading one side with very heavy materials—balance matters!

Once the first side is complete, let it set. You want it to be stable enough that tiles won’t shift when you flip the board. Carefully turn the panel over, ideally onto a soft, flat surface (like foam or a towel) to protect the finished side.

Repeat the same process on the second side: use thin-set, place your mosaic tiles, and check alignment. Try to keep overall thickness even so the board doesn’t warp or hang unevenly.

After both sides are tiled and fully cured (typically 24 hours), apply a sanded grout to each side separately. Let one side cure before flipping to do the other. Clean off excess grout with a dry towel and polish once haze appears.

Finally, consider sealing the grout if your installation will be exposed to moisture or heavy use. While the board itself is waterproof, grout lines can still benefit from protection.

With careful handling and balanced application, you’ll end up with a durable, professional-looking double-sided mosaic that’s both lightweight and long-lasting.

  • What size tiles do you reccomend as best for the edges?
