How to Measure for a Custom Cut-to-Order Backer Board
Need some help with a specific board size? Measuring accurately is critical!
Here are some helpful tips for accurately measuring a surface area (such as a wall space, tabletop, backsplash, etc.) in order to have a backer board to fit. These steps are designed to work with our Skeewbackers, Multi-Art Boards and Acrylic.
🔧 TOOLS & MATERIALS NEEDED
- Measuring tape
- Pencil or marker
- Straight edge or ruler
- Level (for vertical surfaces)
- Notepad or measurement sheet
📏 STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS
1. Prepare the Surface
- Clear the area you’re measuring.
- Remove any objects, appliances, or fixtures if necessary.
- For walls, ensure you can reach edges and corners.
- For tabletops, clear everything off the surface.
2. Measure Width and Height (or Length)
- Use the measuring tape to get:
- Width (side to side)
- Height (top to bottom, for walls/backsplashes)
- Length (front to back, for tabletops/counters)
- Take measurements in inches and note each one clearly.
- Double-check all measurements for accuracy.
Pro Tips:
- Measure in multiple places (top, middle, bottom) to catch any unevenness.
- Use a level to check if the surface is straight (especially walls and backsplashes).
3. Label and Organize Pieces (if multiple)
- Number or label each piece, especially if you have several for a complex area.
- Note the orientation (e.g., "top left", "bottom right") to simplify installation.
